An alarming new survey reveals that an overwhelming 86.7% of Australian women suffer from back pain in the past 12 months, with a staggering 47.6% reporting moderate-to-extreme mental health impacts. This gender gap in mental health impact is particularly pronounced among women aged 25-30, where 63.5% report moderate-to-extreme mental health impacts compared to 44.7% of men, a difference of 18.8 percentage points. The survey, conducted by the Australian Chiropractors Association (ACA), highlights the profound psychological consequences of back pain, with women reporting higher rates of mental exhaustion, sleep disruption, depression, and mental load. The findings underscore the critical need for early intervention and improved access to treatment, especially for women, who are more likely to cite financial barriers and the cost of living as preventing them from seeking help. The survey also reveals that women are significantly more likely to suffer chronic pain, with 46.5% of women with back pain reporting chronic pain compared to 41.6% of men. This is concerning, given that chronic back pain is associated with a heightened risk of mental health problems. The survey's findings are supported by research from Monash University, which projects that chronic back pain will cost the Australian economy $638 billion in lost productivity over the next decade. The ACA is calling for greater awareness of the back pain burden women carry, early intervention, and improved affordability to make a meaningful difference in the health and well-being of Australian women and their families. The survey's release coincides with National Spinal Health Month, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing spinal health and seeking evidence-based, drug-free healthcare to prevent chronic conditions and minimize the impact of back pain on mental health.
